Now it's three closures on the 'Narrow'

HARD on the heels of the notice of the two lock failures on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, we are told that another has suffered a broken cill and is now closed.

In addition to locks 10W and 26W failing over the weekend, Lock 8W has failed too with a broken cill, Keith Gudgin tells us.

An attempt has been made to repair it on Monday, but was unsuccessful, so the lock is closed until further notice.

Cills being damaged

It was our Victor Swift who pointed out that the cills are being damaged by boats being dragged over cills caused by low pounds, showing our own boat stuck on a cill on that canal and scraping over the cill.

Leaking gates and lack of dredging in the many short pounds cause the water to drop too low when locks below are filled.

Lock 26W cannot be reopened until Saturday as the scaffolding needed for access is being used to repair Lock 10W!
