Another on cill at Kegworth Deep

KEGWORTH Deep Lock claimed another victim last Thursday when another hire boat was 'caught' on the cill.

It was last Thursday that the boat on hire from Wyvern Shipping used the lock in its passage down the Soar, but it was too far back in the lock, so its stern became wedged on the cill as the water was released from the lock.

Left paddles open

Then of course it started to sink, but the hire crew obviously either did not realise or did not know to drop the paddles quickly, but kept them open, and so the boat eventually hung-up in the lock.

However, it was removed fairly quickly and the navigation re-opened.

As there is a fairly wide cill in this lock, there have been many such incidents of boats being caught on the cill.  The lock was re-named a few few years back as it was thought the name 'deep' was too off-putting for newcomers, so it was re-named Kegworth New Lock, though of course it isn't!

All who regularly use the Soar refer to it however as Kegworth Deep.
