Two more lock closures today

IT MAY be the start of the season, when all should have been ready and prepared on the waterways, but alas, nothing could be further from the truth, with two more lock closures today (Tuesday).

Stainforth & Keadby Canal is closed at Thorne Lock—the main artery to the Yorkshire canals from the Trent, but is closed 'until further notice'.  This time it is a broken anchor point that holds the lock gate in position at the top of the lock, Keith Gudgin tells us.

It is not known how long the lock will be out of action for, but engineers we are told are assessing the situation

Kennet & Avon again

Yet still another broken lock on the Kennet & Avon, this time Burghfield Lock at Reading, but the good news that it is only a broken collar, and has been repaired quickly with the waterway now open.

It seems that at least some of the areas of the Trust can act quickly to get a lock back into use.

Huddersfield Narrow

The Huddersfield Narrow was re-opened on Wednesday 3rd June.

The bad news is that the Huddersfield Narrow stoppage last week has not been solved, with everything now waiting for the fish to be rescued before the pound can be lowered to inspect the 'large hole' that has appeared in the canal bed.

Work is expected to start tomorrow (Wednesday) but of course there is no knowledge of the extent of the repairs that will be needed, though we are told it will take two weeks...
