Basin to lose its access

THE bridge linking Coventry city centre with the canal basin at the end of the Coventry Canal is to be removed.

Not only used by people visiting the basin but by boaters mooring there and visiting the city, in future walkers will have to cross the busy two lane highway to gain access as the council have decided to remove the bridge, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Dangers of crossings

In its place will be a pedestrian crossing, but locals have complained about the dangers of such crossings on the busy ring road, whilst the bridge keeps people and traffic well apart.

But strangely a spokesman for the council tells that it will be 'just as safe'!  There is a plan for a £7.5 millions scheme to 'improve the ring road', though many feel it is okay as it is, and there has been no demand for any improvement.

A petition has been started to keep the bridge, that quickly gained 300 signatures, with people concerned at impatient drivers not seeing pedestrians and a serious accident happening.
