Dredging—for plants

DREDGING has commenced on the Grantham Canal, but not to improve the waterway for boats but to encourage the growth of a rare plant.

Though the waterway is still mostly derelict and not connected to the system, Canal & River Trust are undertaking dredging to encourage 'help improve water quality and encourage the growth of rare plants', Roger Fox tells us.

Pondweed

Dredging the canal between Harby and Redmile, that is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest will cost £179,000, and will encourage water flow which will help the rare pondweed to thrive.

The pondweed however is not growing in the waterway, but is being planted by students from Brooksby Melton College, who have been propagating the plants ready for growing in the Spring.
