Worcester & Birmingham breach

Published: Friday, 11 April 2014

THE start of the season and the Worcester & Birmingham Canal is closed at Tardebigge, with a breach on the embankment at New Wharf.

Water was found pouring out of the embankment today (Friday) with the closure of the entire Tardebigge Flight from Bridge 60 at the top to Lock 24 at the bottom, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Significant leak

Canal & River Trust describe it as a 'significant leak' through the embankment that has necessitated the closure of the canal. [The word 'breach' is no longer used.] A dam has now been installed at Bridge 57A Tardebigge Old Wharf to prevent the waterway draining away, with a further dam being installed next to the breach to allow water to be removed, so that the damage can be determined, and the best method of repair.

The work is continuing all weekend.
