Opening up Daw End Branch

WORK has now commenced on dredging the Daw End Branch of the Wyrley & Essington Canal, known to boaters as the Curly Wyrley due to its many twists.

Two years project

This is part of a two years project to dredge sections of several canals in the Birmingham Canal Navigations at a cost of £800,000, that will make the Daw End Branch more navigable. The photograph shows the silt coming to the surface on the Branch when attempting to turn a boat.

Canal & River Trust believe that there is about 7,500 tons of silt and other materials that have built up in the canals of the area that will either be used to prevent bank erosion or if contaminated, taken away for disposal.
