L&L worse than expected

INVESTIGATIONS of the breach on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal have discovered that there is leakage through the canal bed that means it will have to be re-lined, requiring a two months stoppage.

The leakage had causedĀ  internal erosion of the embankment, with resulting deep sink holes being discovered in the canal bed, and the ultimateĀ  embankment collapse.

Access road

An access road to the site has now been installed, and the whole area fenced off to prevent public access, that is causing a problem, resulting in security being required.

An excavator will be brought in to excavate the silt from the area and fill in the sink holes, then mats will be laid, with the estimation that this will take 'a minimum of eight weeks'.

Alternative routes

As with past breaches and failures (The crumbling waterways) boaters are advised to take alternative routes to get to their home moorings with such as the Rochdale and Huddersfield canals being suggested.

However, for those who choose to wait on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal until the waterway is re-opened, Canal & River Trust tell us that should those boaters inform it of their decision, the enforcement officers will be alerted, so that no action would be taken.

Services

For services on the waterway that may help boaters choose a suitable area to moor a link is given below, but they are advised not to moor at the service blocks, but allow others to use them.
