Still the stoppages come

Published: Thursday, 04 April 2024

VERY low water on the Rochdale Canal makes it the second stoppage on this canal within two days.

This was yesterday, Wednesday, with the navigation closed between locks 59 and 75, above its junction with the Ashton Canal, Keith Gudgin reports.

Also yesterday, the Aylesbury Arm off the Grand Union Canal was closed at Lock 13.

This was due to a 'partial collapse' of the lock quadrant. The contractors will attend to today, Thursday.

The good news

The good news is the team have fixed the gate on Lock 11 on the Birmingham & Fazeley and the navigation is open again.

And more good news is a review of the times when the navigation will be open on the Llangollen Canal, but under a managed restriction through the site of the leak.

The opening times are now 8am to 3pm, seven days a week (including bank holidays.) This, the trust claims is to give greater flexibility to boaters during the boating season.
