IT WAS five months ago, last October, when vandals opened lock gates causing damage to the towpath of the Caen Hill Flight on the Kennet & Avon Canal, and repair is at last underway.

The ensuing rush of water caused part of an embankment to collapse, but now it is to be repaired, and at the same time the towpath will be resurfaced to make it better for cyclists, Alan tilbury tells us.

In better condition

This will cost £180,000 in total to fill in the hole and resurface around 750 yards of towpath, with work now started, with a spokesman for Canal & River Trust telling that the new all-weather towpath surface will be in better condition than before.

However the work will take eight weeks to complete, with diversions in place.  The canal will not be closed, though there may be occasional hold-ups.
