HARECASTLE Tunnel on the Trent & Mersey Canal was closed on Friday owing to problems with its rescue boat, that would not start.
It is now essential that the boat is in working order in the event of a boat breaking down in the tunnel or someone falling into the water and having to be rescued, Keith Gudgin tells us.
Snow stopped work
The contractor who arranged to effect repairs over the week-end was unable to do so, giving the fall of snow as the reason, and we are now told that the tunnel will be also be closed today, Monday, until repairs are completed.
Boaters wanting access over the next few days are advised to first contact the Trust to ensure that it has re-opened.
