THIS year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of James Brindley, who is known as the 'Father of the English Canal System'.
He was born in Derbyshire and the Chesterfield Canal was his last, so it is appropriate that an illustrated talk of his life and work be given in Chesterfield, that will take place at the Winding Wheel in the town at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2nd March.
Chesterfield Canal Trust
Organised by the Chesterfield Canal Trust the talk is entitled James Brindley—his life, his last canal and its unique boats. It will be given by Christine Richardson and John Lower.
Christine is the author of the most authoritative biography of Brindley. John is one of a team which has just finished building the first new Cuckoo boat, unique to the Chesterfield Canal, for over 80 years, using hand tools only.
For tickets, ring 01246 345222, go to the Chesterfield Theatre's website, buy in person at the Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre next to the Crooked Spire, or pay at the door.
