Blue-green algae is here

ONCE again as the hot weather comes so does the blue-green algae along the canals and rivers.

The algae has appeared on many canals throughout the system, and even the rivers that are usually not too prone, with the River Great Ouse particularly hard hit particularly around Ely.

Dangerous

Though the blooms are short lived they are dangerous and should not be touched and animals should not be allowed to swim in water were it is prevalent.

The picture by Jimmy Hover shows the blue-green algae on the Caldon Canal yesterday (Thursday).

Of concern to the Environmental Agency is that the algae takes oxygen from the water, raising worries about the fish.

Contact with the algae can cause stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache, fever, muscle weakness with humans and with animals seizures, vomiting or diarrhoea.
