Email: So little money

Published: Thursday, 21 November 2013

It concerns me to read that so little money is now being allocated to maintaining our waterways. As has been pointed out, we are left with a situation whereby the only option for the future lies with Canal & River Trust (CaRT), which has a charitable status.

How long will it be before someone decides that Government money should not be going to support a charity—it won't be the first time—and decides that a nice little saving can be made in this time of recession by stopping it?

Where will that leave us? DEFRA started the process when it took money from all the other areas it covered to pay for the farming subsidy débâcle. I believe that our beloved waterways have rarely been in so much danger as they are now. I hope that this won't be our future but I remain worried that it might.
