NOW that we have Canal & River Trust in charge of our waterways, a number of enthusiasts in the North Wales and Borders Waterways area have taken the initiative to formally set up a group calling itself the Small Tasks Team Volunteers to make it work.
The Trust has agreed to recognise it as an Identified Group, and the members are being asked to register with the volunteer co-ordinator for the area.
Work parties
This will then enable the group to have work parties under the leadership of one of its four nominated team leaders. The Trust will produce all the related paperwork but will not need to supervise the work directly because of the experience of the team leaders.
This will not be another litter picking group as the volunteers are all used to ‘hands on' construction work on the canals and it is envisaged that they will be undertaking projects that enhance the area for all canal users.
A number of projects have already been carried out and more have been identified by the group, and by the Trust's waterway manager, which will provide future work for the volunteers.
