More vegetation for safety

IN A strange move, British Waterways have decided to plant more vegetation by the banks of the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation where Matthew Cartright fell in and drowned.

Many feel it is the vegetation that hides the dangers of the water, through which young children 'explore' that causes the problem, as the youngsters are unable to see the danger.

Safety measure

But British Waterways, in response to the huge concern at the death of eight years old Matthew, have decided to 'fill in the gaps' with more vegetation as a 'safety measure'.

Since his death, fellow school children have painted a mural of him, that has been fixed on a wall in Mexborough, showing Matthew on his bike surrounded by trees.

He fell into the waterway whilst picking blackberries by the waters' edge in August.  Since then there has been a campaign to erect signs.
