Please return milestones

MANCHESTER, Bolton and Bury Canal Society people are asking those who have the original milestones from the disused waterway to let them know, so they can eventually be restored in their original positions.

When the waterway was built it had 62 of the stones marking its distances, but there are 32 missing, and it is believed people may have used them for such as garden ornaments, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Recently recovered

One however has recently been recovered from just outside the Horseshoe pub in Ringley by its landlord, where he found in covered in weeds.  It was discovered the the milestone actually stood by the waterway outside the pub.

Members of the society have now pulled it out, and replaced it in its original position by the pub.  The search is now on for the remaining milestones.
