Volunteer recognition award

VOLUNTEER awards are now coming thick and fast as British Waterways move towards its new charity status, with its dependence on volunteers.

Not a well known waterways society this time but an award for the members of the Whilton and Buckby Lock Association, who have been helping British Waterways with the Buckby Flight on the Grand Union Canal. (Though two names, there is only one flight of locks,  situated below Norton Junction, being known both as Buckby Locks and Whilton Locks.)

Local residents

Of the volunteer award, Chris Burton of the association explained:

"Originally it was just a group of local residents who thought they could help with a little bit of tidying up and things like litter picks and raising money from people who go through the locks.

"Then last year we also started to do some painting and painted four out of the seven locks. It's quite an achievement and we are very proud of it."
