Aire & Calder mill interest

THE impressive Allinson's Flour Mill that ceased production in February, ending an estimated 2,000 years of milling in Castleford is proving of interest to developers.

It is owned by British Waterways, and people are worried that it will be tempted to sell the listed building to be turned into flats.

Worried about its future

Alison Drake, Chairman of Castleford Heritage Trust, is worried what will now happen to the site, stating:

"Obviously we're concerned about what will happen to that building because it's a historic site.  If it has to be developed we would want that building to be retained as a heritage building so it's protected, and we will be watching the development with a keen eye.

The mill is leased  by site owners British Waterways North, with Simon Currass, Estates Manager for British Waterways, stating that British Waterways will be taking a keen interest in the future of the mill.
