A WOMAN who helped drag a drowning man from the Erewash Canal is to be commended for her bravery.

Helen Cox clung on to the man to keep him afloat until police arrived, and he was hauled out of the waterway, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Recognises people's bravery

Helen and a man who also helped are to receive a certificate of commendation from the Royal Humane Society, which recognises people's bravery. The pair were also praised personally by society secretary Dick Wilkinson.

When the police arrived, the pair were lying on the towpath reaching down keeping a man's head above water.

Dick Wilkinson explained:

"He was a very large man and had thrown himself into the canal in a suicide bid. He was heavily intoxicated and incapable of pulling himself out of the water.

It was pointed out that had the man not been held, he would not have been able to stay afloat, so would have drowned.
