Derby decision delayed

THOUGH the decision as to whether permission will be granted for the restoration of the Derby Canal was expected earlier this month it will not now be given until the end of September.

THE Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust Ltd is seeking Outline Planning Permission from three authorities for the complete restoration of the Derby Canal.

Complete restoration

Permission is being sought from the Derby City Council, Erewash Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council for the complete restoration of the former Derby Canal from Sandiacre via Derby City to Swarkestone.

The decision had been expected by now, but  a Derby City Council spokesman stated this was delayed as it needed further information, with Chris Madge, Chairman of Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society telling that this delay was mainly down to questions posed by British Waterways.

The restoration would provide an ideal 'week-end' cruising ring between the Erewash Canal and the Trent & Mersey Canal.
