THE FUNDING FOR BRISTOL Floating Harbour has been withdrawn by the Environment Agency.

The funding being to prevent flooding of the harbour against high tides, Janet Friend reports.

There has been a report from the agency to Bristol City Council stating it is to cease funding the Stop Gate operation that holds back high tides.

Challenged

The council however has challenged the EA decision to withhold £43,000 of funding, but were told the agency could not afford the work.

However, the agency is already funding other vital maintenance and repair work in the harbour that runs to millions of pounds.

So the council should not be too concerned, though the Stop Gate is important for the safety of the harbour under high tides.
