THE CHESTERFIELD CANAL TRUST is in the need of Maintenance Team volunteers.
The trust is looking for volunteers to be part of our Derbyshire Maintenance Team, and tells:
We were awarded a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, to help recruit people to look after our restored sections of the canal. This is a two years project to develop teams of volunteers, with the aim of maintaining and developing their local green spaces, both on the water and the surrounding environment.
Variety of roles
There will be a variety of roles, some hands-on maintenance, some monitoring the environment’ some conducting surveys and some keeping an eye out for areas that need attention. There will be something for all abilities. Don’t worry about knowledge or skills—we will train you.
The money arrived before Christmas and we are already booking and starting training, purchasing equipment and putting together a recruitment campaign for new local volunteers. We expect to be holding taster sessions and open days in April, with the work programme starting in May.
Initially the focus will be the already completed areas around Staveley. In the summer, when the restoration work is finished, we will move on, to the new section. If you are interested or want to know more, please email
