THE 'LEAK' ON THE Shropshire Union Canal between Knolles Bridge 131 and Backford Bridge 133 will be repaired by the end of November.
It was on the 17th July that the navigation suffered a culvert 'leak', Keith Gudgin reports.
Loss of water overnight
There was a significant loss of water overnight in the pound between Chester and Ellesmere Port, on the Shropshire Union Canal, closing the section to Ellesmere Port Museum.
With Canal & River Trust telling this is due to a leak at Culvert 16 which is located between the bridges.
We are now told that works have continued to progress well, with the recent period of mostly dry weather has allowed teams to complete the relining of the failed culvert, with repairs to the canal bed now nearing completion.
Refilling and testing
The next phase will involve refilling and testing, that will begin during the week commencing 24th November.
Subject to successful testing and no unforeseen issues, the trust expects to reopen the navigation on the afternoon of Thursday 28th November. The work taking four and a half months.
