BY THE TIME Bite Lock on the Cam is repaired it will have taken 20 months.

Stabilisation work

This is due to stabilisation work taking place on the lock.

CamLockClosedThe lock was closed in May of last year, when a survey commissioned by the Conservators of the River Cam revealed structural issues with the lock island.

Repair work has now started but the conservators expect this to take around 16 weeks, so added to the 16 months that have already passed, this would mean a closure of the lock of approximately 20 months.

Progressing well

A spokesperson for the conservators explained:

"Stabilisation works at Baits Bite Lock Island were mobilised earlier this month [September] and are now progressing well. The project is focused on reinforcing and securing the lock island to ensure its long-term resilience and safety. All works are being carried out with careful consideration for the surrounding environment and waterway users."

Booms have been installed as safety measures to restrict access to adjacent areas of the river.
