The worst month ever

Published: Wednesday, 02 July 2025

WHAT WITH THE LACK of rainfall and the waterways drying-up coupled with other failures, June was the worst month ever for stoppages.

With Keith Gudgin reporting 44 stoppages in June!

Did not include smashing into bridges

And this did not include vehicles in waterways or smashing into bridges.

The month ended with City Road Lock on the Regents Canal closed, with the reason given as 'Maintenance', but the message from Canal & River Trust telling that following a recent site visit—'we regret to inform you that the lock will remain closed for the foreseeable future'.

As another reason for its failure was 'due to a broken paddle', this length of time is difficult to understand.

Today, Wednesday, the  2nd July is notice of another long stoppage with Swingbridge 7 on the Pocklington Canal unable to swing due to a fault with the pintle and is currently inoperable.

With our being told—Mechanical & Electrical team have been out to assess the work to look at a fix.

Last two to three weeks

They anticipate that works will last two to three weeks.

And so it goes on.
