Figure of Three closed again
THE FIGURE OF THREE Locks on the Calder & Hebble is closed again.
This is the second time this month this has occurred with again a paddle failure, Keith Gudgin reports.
This time the failure is described as a 'blown paddle'. that is unusual, as anything 'blown' usually refers to a cill...
However, the lock is closed to navigation, with Canal & River Trust stating that operatives will be on site today, Friday, to assess the necessary repairs.
The lock was last closed on the 6th May this year with paddle problems.
Destroyed
The Figure of Three had one of its locks destroyed by Storm Clara on the 23rd February 2022.
It took just over a year to rebuild, by contractor Keir, it being reopened in March 2023. The picture shows where one of the two locks was situated and that had to be completely rebuilt.
Though named the Figure of Three there are only two locks, 5 and 6. The name is thought to deprive from the shape formed by the winding Calder in that area, with the locks then forming a 'figure of three'.
LATEST—a quick as the operatives have been to site and a repair has been successful, with the navigation now open today, Saturday.
