Peak Forest Canal towpath collapse
THE RECENT freeze caused the collapse of the towpath on the Peak Forest Canal.
It is now in need of urgent repair as it could be unsafe, particularly for pedestrians, should it expand. Janet Friend reports.
If left it is most likely to spread further, but the trust's people have inspected the failure that is between Tesco and the canal basin in Whaley Bridge.
Attended quickly
The collapsed towpath was reported by a resident with it being attended quickly by the trust and a security fence erected.
It would seem that the towpath contained water and froze, it then expanded and caused the large crack. With Nev Clarke, director of the Whaley Bridge Canal Group, telling:
“The crack appeared after the deep freeze we had recently. It was perfectly fine before this but the water had to go somewhere and it has caused this crack but in credit to the Canal & River Trust they appeared within the hour after it was reported to come and investigate."
There is no intimation however as to when it will be repaired.
