Update to London pre-bookable moorings for winter
SOME updates to London pre-bookable moorings have been announced by Canal & River Trust.
New, chargeable overnight moorings were introduced at five locations earlier this year on the capital’s most popular stretches of canal, allowing boaters to guarantee somewhere to stop for the night in Central London.
Little Venice
These include iconic locations such as Little Venice, which was named one of 10 Marvels of the Modern Waterways in a 2022 public vote.
Following a review of usage, the pre-bookables at Camden Visitor Moorings have been returned to seven-day towpath moorings. This means they are available on a first-come-first-served basis to all boaters with a licence at no additional cost.
All other pre-bookable moorings will continue to operate year-round, but with the introduction of winter pricing, at a cost of £20 per night through November, December, January and February.
In response to demand
Canal & River Trust National Boating Manager Matthew Symonds explained:
“We introduced pre-bookable moorings in response to demand from boaters who wanted to be certain of somewhere to stop for the night when travelling into London, as a way of sharing the space fairly. The new (reduced) winter rate offers boaters the chance to set off with confidence and visit some of the most picturesque canal locations in the world—with the income generated helping our charity to keep canals alive for future generations.
“These moorings account for a small percentage of available space in Central London, and as a result of a review of operations, the Camden Visitor Moorings will return to being part of the more than 90% of space in the capital which is available to licence payers at no additional charge.”
