Puzzle of Shroppie closure
A SIGNIFICANT LEAK on the Shropshire Union Canal is closing the waterway for repair from the 4th to 25th of November.
The closure is between bridges 24 and 25 at High Onn near Church Easton, Keith Gudgin reports.
Canal & River Trust tell there has been a history of leakage at High Onn Let Off Valve requiring regular repairs, but now the leakage is appearing more frequently, soi works are required to complete a permanent repair to stop the leakage and fill the voids to stabilise the embankment.
Boats can still pass
Boats can still pass, but the clam dams restrict the width of navigation. The nearby offside moorings are affected, with boats opposite the works being moved.
But now, owing to the safety report, navigation will be available daily from 9:00am to 10:00am and from 3:00pm to 4:0pm only, with boats being escorted through the area to ensure the safety of the dam.
The reduction in working hours will extend the project's duration to four weeks. Work will commence next Monday morning 14th October and conclude by 5:00pm on Friday 8th November.
However the trust state in its stoppage notice that navigation is closed, that contradicts the above.
