Wilt & Berks sinkhole filled-in
THE sinkhole that appeared near Swindon on the Wilts & Berks Canal has been filled-in.
This hole was threatening to empty the pound above it, Janet Friend reports.
It appeared in February, and as it was affecting the canal above so Swindon Borough Council fixed a temporary dam to stop the flow.
Draining into the river
The sinkhole is at the aqueduct over the Ray with the possibility of the canal water draining into the river.
After completion of the work, a spokesman for the council told:
"Work has now been completed to repair the culvert, which involved damming the river to allow for repairs to be made. This involved lowering the water level in one of the existing culverts so our team could undertake the repairs.
"With the repairs now complete, the sinkhole has been filled in and the team have left the area and we would like to thank the team and the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust for their help during the repairs."
