Tents by the locks

THOUGH we get the occasional litter by the locks of our waterways. it is nothing like that of Waterways Ireland.

It has spent €145,000 to date to remove tents by canals and to put up fences in an effort to stop them, Janet Friend reports.

IrelandTentsA total of 360 tents have been removed from the locks and banks of the Grand Union Canal in Dublin alone.

Encampments

These are in 'encampments', with Waterways Ireland and Dublin City Council in discussions over plans to make the canal banks less likely to have tented encampments on them.

The plans include more trees, seating and attempts to increase footfall to get the towpaths of the canals used by the wider public.

The fencing is to stop more tented encampments springing up. The tents are lived in but are still being removed with 30 taken away in one day.
