Not going to plan

THE Wigan Flight on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is still closed at Lock 84.

With our Keith Gudgin remarking that things are not going to plan!

Cannot remove concrete arrowhead

Unfortunately, Canal & River Trust relate, its plans to remove the concrete arrowhead from the lock using machinery from the side of the lock could not proceed as intended due to the size of the required machinery.

So the contractors now have to spend time designing a safe access plan for the lock.

This entails building ramps into the canal bed and into the lock, telling that these ramps will allow workers to break up the damaged arrowhead and safely remove it from the lock.

Work on ramps commenced

Work has commenced today with the creation of the ramps and the installation of the necessary machinery.

But the rebuilding process will not start until next week, so it will be towards the end of this month when the Wigan Flight should reopen to boating. The lock failed and was closed to navigation on Saturday 26th May.
