Stoppages piling-up

Published: Wednesday, 16 August 2023

THE stoppages keep piling up, with four on one day last week and still coming.

Today it's the Leeds & Liverpool again with its Greenberfield  Flight out of action.

The Top Lock (44) has broken ground paddles today, Wednesday.

Stainforth & Keadby Canal

Moore's Swing Bridge on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal has broken down today, Wednesday.

It is understood that contractors are attending to establish the cause of failure.

Kennet & Avon

The summit pound of the Kennet & Avon Canal is now closed.

There were boats grounding in the tunnel on Monday the 14th with the summit then closed, but it was reopened the following day after water had been pumped in.

But now, with the level low again from locks 51 to 61 the trust tells that 'due to water shortages it has made the difficult decision this morning to close the summit pound'. This will be reviewed on Friday morning.

Lee Navigation

THE Environmental Agency is suffering stoppages too, with the Lee Navigation closed.

Ware Lock, is at present inoperable with reports that the chamber cannot be either filled or emptied.

The agency is currently investigating this matter.
