THOUGH just the tenth day of the new year the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has its fourth stoppage!

Higherland Lock at Gargrave that was operating on assisted passage is now completely closed to navigation, Keith Gudgin reports.

Canal & River Trust inform boaters that as from today, Tuesday 10th, the lock will be closed until further notice.

This is to facilitate the repair of the work that was causing it to previously only operate on very limited assisted passage.

There is no intimation as to when this will be completed, or even when it will start.

So far this year there have been seven waterway stoppages, with obviously most of them on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, that last year also had a good share of stoppages.
