Highway Authority won't allow Ashton road closure

THE tree blocking the Ashton Canal at Bridge 26 cannot be moved out of the waterway.

However, this is no fault of Canal & River Trust but the local highways authority, Keith Gudgin reports.

Not approve closure

The authority will not approve a road closure which means the large tree blocking the waterway cannot yet be moved, as a road closure is necessary for the crane that has to be used due to the size of the tree.

However the contractors believe they can find an alternative menthod of removal without the large crane closing the road and hope to attempt this on Friday 3rd of September.

So there is still hope of the Ashton being re-opened.
