Hertford Union Canal closed

DELAYED maintenance has closed the Hertford Union Canal.

The required repairs to Lock 1 wall has worsened and needs attention, so the waterway was closed on Monday and will remain closed, Keith Gudgin reports.

Dam failure

Canal & River Trust state that though the wall needs attention the closure is due to a dam failure. However, contractors have been advised, so there is no intimation when work will be completed.

The waterway is just under two miles and has moored boats.  It's claim to fame was when Timothy West and Prunella Scales took a boat up the canal crashing around in the dark in a television series and remarking it was a 'contact sport'.
