Fell on deaf ears

WHEN I was at the Slough Canal Festival I walked from the field and onto the towing path, writes Bill Ridgeway.

There to be met by a representative of CaRT with a spiel something like we look after Britain's waterways.

Rode very close

What, all of them, I thought.  My reply was an inquisitively toned "Really?".  At that point a cyclist rode by and very close to us and other people and I couldn't resist adding:

"And that is what you call looking after the canals?"  I'm sure the meaning of the remark had absolutely no effect but it had to be said.
