THERE is a possibility that the pacu fish will soon be inhabiting our waterways, that are known for taking off male swimmers genitals, with one swimmer having bled to death in New Guinea.

But they have been found in waters in Denmark and France, with it believed that they have been released from aquariums when they grow too big, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Piranha-like

The pacu is a piranha-like fish usually found in South America, but grow to a weight of 44lbs, with the experts believing they have been kept by people thinking they are piranhas, but keep growing so are thrown out into fresh water such as rivers and canals.

Known as the 'nut-cracker' fish there are fears that it may be released in this country, and be dangerous as it is known to go straight for the groin of men swimming.

Take bites

They are not like piranhas that strip flesh off their captives, but take bites, with a spokesman for Copenhagen's Blue Planet Aquarium telling that no-one ever thought that a pacu could live in the wild in Denmark, first of all because the water temperature is too low, but the one caught was doing well.
