Canal bridge could be closed

CHESHIRE East Council members have called for the damaged Brooks Lane Bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal in Middlewich to either be closed to traffic or severely restricted.

After a lorry crashed into the parapet in December, and little chance of money being found for its repair, councillors believe the bridge is now too dangerous to carry heavy traffic, Alan tilbury tells us.

Solutions

The bridge was closed to traffic after it was damaged, with two main solutions being put forward—stopping all traffic using the bridge and making it a pavement area only or restricting its width that only cars and small vans could use it.

Stopping up the bridge to traffic completely has raised concerns as many use the bridge in their vehicles, whereas now they need to make a detour, but restricting it means that the sat navs used by lorry drivers will still give the bridge as access, which could lead to further damage or them attempting to reverse and turn in the restricted road.
