Spending money sensibly?

FOLLOWING the fall from Marple Aqueduct I am not surprised that CART are planning to erect railings to the off-side of the aqueduct, but how can this possibly cost 1.5 million pounds? Asks Graham Westgate.

The aqueduct is 96m long, so that's approximately £15,000 per metre?! How can that be reasonable use of scarce resources?

Re-use railings

Having recently returned from a trip to Bugsworth Basin I noticed (just!) the very expensive looking railings on the towpath side opposite Ramsden Hall, how much did these cost? And as they cannot be seen for the majority of their length, due to the lush and long term growth of vegetation, in front of, through and behind the railings, could not 100m of these be reused at the aqueduct during these times of stringent funding restrictions?

If this suggestion gives the CaRT heritage horde apoplexy, surely some appropriate looking and effective railings could be designed, manufactured (or sourced) and installed for considerably less than £15,000 per metre?

Please CaRT, at least try to spend our money sensibly!
