Easy fit diesel engine tachometer

I HAVE just fitted a 'Tiny Tach' digital diesel engine tachometer to my narrowboat and I am rather pleased with the result, writes Keith Gudgin.

It is very suitable for fitting to older engines or engines/alternators without any provision for an electronic tachometer. Full instructions are supplied and there is a contact if you have any difficulties etc.

No calibration needed

The unit does not need any calibration or setting up as it works by sensing the pulses through one of the fuel injector pipes. The transducer, or sender, just clamps onto the pipe so the pipe does not have to be cut or anything, just cleaned. You will also need a 12 volt +/- connection. It is even supplied with an Allen key to do up the transducer.

It doesn't matter how many cylinders your engine has as it only needs one cylinder for sensing and therefore will only get one pulse per revolution. So whether you have 2, 4, 6, 8 or more cylinders makes no difference. You will need to measure the pipe diameter as it comes in 5mm, 6mm, and ¼ inch versions and it is important to order the correct one.

Suit most engines

The unit is very small and the transducer is tiny, see photos. It has a clock on it which tells you how long the engine has been running, two countdown timers for maintenance and a maximum revs indicator. The unit will measure up to 10,000rpm so I think it will suit most boat engines.

The control/readout unit is vibration and water resistant giving you a varied choice of location as you don't need to ensure it's kept totally dry.

The unit took me less than an hour to fit. As you do not need to calibrate any pulley ratios or compensate for multiple cylinders it's simplicity itself, easy to fit and self calibrating.
