Email: Expecting too much

Published: Monday, 10 March 2014

I think Keith Gudgin is expecting too much from Volly Lockies. In my experience—three to four weeks boating annually for the last 25+ years—a BW lock keeper helping me through his (or her) lock was unusual. Helping me through a flight was unheard of. Last year I was grateful for the help that Volly Lockies gave on the three occasions that we went down and up the Lapworth and Wilmcote flights. I understand that there's a team of about 40 that, between them, cover Lapworth, Wilmcote and Hatton.

He complains that they're not there when he starts boating at 8am. When he starts is his choice. Not living near a canal, I can't volunteer to help in this way but if I could, I certainly wouldn't want to start at 8am. Perhaps Keith also expects all the shops to be open before 8am so that he can do whatever shopping he needs before he sets off?

Within the volunteering opportunities available, anyone can choose what they want to do and when they want to do it. I volunteer with the National Trust and choose to be at a particular property for certain hours on a particular day of the week. I hope that what I do there makes visits more enjoyable.

So, Keith, be grateful that Volly Lockies exist even if they're not always where you want when you want. Last year they helped me with my boating and anyone who does that gets my appreciation and thanks.
