World Canals Conference

THIS years World Canals Conference (WCC) is to be hosted by the the City of Bydgoszcz in Poland.

And is organised under the patronage and in co-operation with the Inland Waterways International (IWI), on the 24th to 26th June.

It is an annual event for enthusiasts of inland waterways, held alternately in Europe, Asia and America (2019—China, 2021USA, 2022Germany, 2025USA).

Further opportunity

This event provides a further opportunity to continue the discussion on the sustainable development of Polish inland waterways and place it in an international context. It is also a chance to exchange views, ideas and most importantly, learn about solutions used in other countries in the area of waterways. Ultimately, WCC 2024 is a good chance to connect people who use, take care of and develop inland navigation every day, not just in Poland.

The following topic areas will be covered during WCC 2024:

1 Presentations during the session Ecology and Technologies will be dedicated to environmental topics related to rivers and canals, including preservation of resources and ecosystems as well as advanced sustainable technologies.

2 Presentations during the session Water, Heritage and Tourism will be dedicated to tourist and recreational use of rivers and canals as one of the essential meanings of combining the economy with the environment. A special session dedicated to aquatic museology is planned as well.

3 Man and human activities constitute an inseparable component of relations between people and the aquatic environment, including rivers and canals. Presentations during the session will focus on determination of a catalogue of human impacts on the environment in time and space. In addition, the session will feature revitalisation projects of rivers, canals and waterways, to counteract the negative effects, both past and present.

Conference Intended for:

The conference is intended for the academic community (research workers, students), managers, administrators, and users of inland waterways, local government officials, entrepreneurs, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and practitioners in the fields of shipping and water tourism.
