Broken Macclesfield Canal culvert takes two months to repair

IT WAS way back in December that a broken culvert closed the Macclesfield Canal.

But there is hope that it will be repaired and the navigation reopened this month, Keith Gudgin reports.

Failed in December

It was on the 11th December when the failed culvert closed the navigation with Canal & River Trust now advising that after everything is cleared-up and the dams removed it should be open on Friday 16th February—it having taken two months to repair!

This culvert is between Kent Green Bridge (87) and Hall Green Stop Lock, (13), where the Macclesfield Canal joins the Trent & Mersey Canal.

There have been many reasons given for the time taken for the repair, but it is coming to an end with just the grouting work to undertake, and when finished the canal will be rewatered and finally inspected for leaks, then hopefully reopened.
