A VERY unusual canalside residence by the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal is for sale.

This is what is believed to be the second largest Windmill in England and is on offer though Savills for £1.25m, Alan Tilbury reports.

Wendover windmillTransported flour

It was constructed as a flour mill in 1796 when the Wendover Arm was opened, with the canal used to transport flour to various towns on the then Grand Junction Canal but when a storm shattered the sails in 1904 it struggled to survive with steam power until 1926 when the General Strike caused a shortage of coal and the business closed.

The present owner bought the mill in 2008 and completely restored it with a kitchen, dining room and cloakroom on the ground floor and two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor.

Five floors

The second floor is taken up by a sitting room, with a further bathroom and bedrooms on the third floor. The main bedroom is on the fourth floor with the remains of the machinery on the fifth floor,
