New marina for Leeds & Liverpool Canal

PLANNING permission has been submitted for a new marina on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Burnley.

Planning permission is for an 80 berth marina on the site of the old Bank Hall Miners Club, which was destroyed by fire in 1993. It will include the old Bank Hall football ground, Alan Tilbury reports.

Usual facilities

The plans include all the usual facilities associated with a marina including a general shop.  As it is on the towpath side of the canal a bridge will be built over its entrance off the waterway.

At present the waste land is used for fly tipping and a home for drug users, with the application seen as a vast improvement.

Boost the economy

A spokesman for the applicant stated:

"A high quality development will provide enhancement of the land and uplift the local area and boost the economy.

"The retention of the boundary trees and creation of new landscaping and tree planting, will create the opportunity for wildlife to re-inhabit the site and encourage wildlife to thrive."
