THE damage to the towpath by vandals releasing water at the top of the Caen Hill Flight on the Kennet & Avon Canal has caused Canal & River Trust to make the decision to close the waterway.

The navigation is now closed between locks 48 and 49 as the damage has caused both the towpath and embankment to deteriorate further, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Though the damage was caused last Sunday night and the waterway was open with boaters being advised to take care, the deterioration and subsequent closure means that there is no access at the top of the flight, where the locks are situated.

Emergency work will start next Tuesday 3rd November.
