Come and see the lock

THERE is little doubt that Canal & River Trust (CaRT) is making use of its winter works to get the public interested in its waterways by opening drained locks for inspection.

Most weekends during the winter will see drained locks open for inspection, with this coming weekend Bottom Lock on the Wigan Flight on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal being open for the public to inspect, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Engineers on hand

There will be the engineers on hand to point out how the locks work and show how they were originally constructed, some 200 years ago. It was the Bingley Five Rise on this same waterway that drew the record number of people to inspect the drained locks.

The Wigan lock will be open to the public from 10am to 2.30pm on the 16th and 17th of November.
