New jobs for volunteers

IN ADDITION to their main tasks of helping boaters through locks and litter picking, volunteers along the Calder & Hebble Navigation have a new task.

They are now assisting Canal & River Trust staff with the work of installing bird and bat boxes along the waterway, starting at Dewsbury, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Donated

This is made possible by £5,000 that has been donated by the public after an appeal, launched by CaRT to 'help deliver a range of ecological improvements along six miles of canal and river around Dewsbury for wildlife.

For the future CaRT intends installing motion sensored web cams so it can monitor the species using the boxes, though it is not known for what purpose.
